Everything You Need To Know About EXPECTATIONS

Be expectant

Many Christians come to God with little or no expectations while some think if they expect big things from God, He won’t be able to do it- this used to happen to me in the time past, then, I had no results to show for serving God, poverty and failure were my neighbours.

But when I changed my mentality by adding expectations to my efforts, I can see the results coming y way, I’m now entering into a new phase where I will no longer know the address of poverty again.

Having a list of your expectations is not a bad idea. My current ‘parent’s expectations’ are progress and success while my ‘children’s expectations’ are blissful marriage in 3 months time, financial fortune in less than 1 month time, miracle jobs, contracts and business start-up in less than 1 month time.

God doesn’t take assumptions, we need to be specific with our expectations. Make your expectations straight to the point.

Let me share this scripture with you,

And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. [30] And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. [31] And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. [32] And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you? [33] They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. [34] So Jesus had compassion on them , and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him. (Mathew. 20:29-30).

Let me explain,

these blind men were crying for mercy, and Jesus heard them but their requests were vague. That was why Jesus asked them in (vs 32), ‘what do you want me to do for you?’ What Jesus was actually saying is that “be specific,“go straight to the point.”

If you are the type who come to Jesus without expectations as from today go and write down your expectations. You don’t have to write down a three pages expectations list before you receive answers from God. Just write down the specific things that you are expecting from God.

Is Having Expectations Biblical?

Yes. It is very very much scriptural. I will be sharing with you these two scriptures to back up your expectations:

  1. Proverbs 23:18 KJV (For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off). That scripture is assuring us that there will always be a light in the end of the tunnel. No matter how far or delay it may seem, understand that there is no weeping that is permitted to go beyond a night. “weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning.” The real emphasis of this scripture is that you should not give up on your expectations no matter what is going on in the world around you, circumstances and conditions notwithstanding, Keep pressing in, pressing on and pressing through. God will always reward the work of diligence any day anytime any where (serving God is universal), though it may tarry (taking some times, even years) but it will surely come to pass.
  2. Jeremiah 29:11 KJV – (For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord , thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end). That second scripture is also saying something similar. But it mostly emphasize on the way God think. I know it sounds strange to some of you that God think. Yes, God do think and He think positively. Now, this is where you must be sensitive to what comes across your mind. Negatives thoughts are ‘by-products’ of the devil (Further discussion about the mind and imagination will require some other blog posts. But I can link you up with my previous post here).

Friend, loose yourself from the shackles of ignorance and embrace the truth for a change of story. As you are obeying God’s commandments as a lifestyle, also try to be expectant. Let your expectations be anchored on the promises of God (see Deu 28). Many receive nothing because they expect nothing. Very simple.
