Prayer And Fasting: Avoid Hunger Strike & Learn How To Pray And Fast Efficiently

It’s no longer news that we are in a season of prayer and fasting as most churches have started their proclaimed annual fast. While some churches fast for twenty-one days, some fast for forty to seventy days depending on divine directives given to the churches through their ministers.

The essence of this exercise is to prepare us for a triumphant life throughout the remaining periods of the year and to empower us to overcome unseen forces that may hinder our advancement in all life.

The truth is that it takes a great deal of sacrifice to engage in prayer and fasting for a long period. That’s you must learn how to maximize the platform for a profitable result and avoid going through a mere hunger strike.

From this digital seminar, you’ll learn the true meaning of prayer and fasting, why you need to get involved and how to engage.

Now, let’s delve into the details:

What Is Prayer And Fasting?

Prayer and fasting is the combination of two words. Prayer. Fasting. To define prayer and fasting, I must first let you know the meaning of prayer. Prayer is not a monologue, but a dialogue between humanity and divinity. Prayer is communication or interaction between man and God.

“God is not an idol, anytime you pray, wait for an answer.” – Anonymous

Fasting means afflicting your body to edify your spirit. You can also put it this way, to punish your body to strengthen your inner man. Or this way, to fasten your body to strengthen your spirit.

Dictionary English defines prayer as follow:

  • A practice of communicating with one’s God.
  • The specific words or methods used for praying.
  • A request , a petition

And fasting as: Abstinence from food.

In light of the definition above we can deduce that:

  • Prayer is talking with God
  • Fasting is abstinence from food.

Therefore, prayer and fasting are talking with God while abstaining from food.

Is Abstinence From Water Also Part Of Prayer and Fasting?

The question above is highly controversial and many believers have been eluded with the blessings that prayer and fasting carry by believing that one must also abstain from water when fasting.

According to Franklin Hall from His book Fasting: Atomic Power With God,

Food and water are different. We should not associate abstinence from water with the subject of fasting. Whether your fasting continues for ten days, two weeks, forty days, or longer, your bowels should move every few days. If a person does not drink water while the fast is in progress, how can these channels of elimination function properly? The drinking of water will continue the process of cleaning while the fast continues.

I agree with Franklin Hall’s notion. We need water to survive just as we need air and sleep. Food is not the most essential need for living. Water, air, and sleep are more important than food but we think that if we don’t eat we would die, the truth is that we could still survive longer without food than when we lack water, air, and sleep but we place more value on food because we pay for it.

Other Believer’s Perspectives On Prayer And Fasting?

No one is an island of knowledge, when we learn from others’ views it helps to boost our understanding and have a more solid perspective to take home with us.

Fasting in the Biblical sense is choosing not to partake of food because your spiritual hunger is so deep, your determination in intercession so intense, or your spiritual warfare so demanding that you have temporarily set aside even fleshly needs to give yourself to prayer and meditation. – Wesely Deuewel

Fasting increases our sense of humility and dependence on the lord (for our hunger and physical weakness continually remind us how we are not strong in ourselves but need the lord). Fasting allows us to give more attention to prayer. It is a continual reminder that, just as we sacrifice some personal comfort to the Lord by not eating, so we must continually sacrifice all of ourselves to Him. Therefore, in a symbolic way, fasting says to God that we are prepared to lay down our lives so that the situation is changed rather than that it continues. – Wayne Grudem

Prayer is the value that we offered in fasting. Fasting is meant to facilitate an answered prayer (prayer is the major reason for fasting).

In Mark 17,

“And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you. “If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove: and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” (vs 20)

“Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” (vs 21)

Here is my rule of thumb for success in life which I have been applying to my life and I have seen positive results.

From the scripture above, some mountains will not give way unless we dive into prayer and fasting. Mountains are problems like sickness, disease, failure, poverty, and stagnation (the list is endless… Verse 21 of the scripture above clearly stated that problems and chaos choose to stay unless we buy into prayer and fasting (not just prayer).

“You could say that prayer without fasting is like boxing one tied behind your back and that fasting without prayer is, well, dieting.” – Matt Fradd

Why Should I Subscribed To It?

You need to buy into the idea prayer of prayer and fasting for the following reasons or check my old post Profitable Approach To Prayer And Fasting for more insights:

1. Access To Divine Guidance

One of the reasons you should subscribe to prayer and fasting this year is divine guidance. Everyone needs direction in one way or another other no matter how smart you may think you are. Some people make wrong choices as to whom to marry; which business to invest in; which course to study. One wrong step can wreck a whole destiny. Look before you leap as most people leap before looking and become miserable. Prayer and fasting are proven platforms to seek God’s guidance.

“If you’re having a difficult time making the best decision then consider fasting. Fasting is simply taking something you regularly do and replacing it with praying and seeking God. For example, instead of eating food, you can take time to seek God and allow Him to speak to you about – the decision.” – Dan Black

2. Access To Supernatural Revelation

Prayer and fasting are one of the major spiritual platforms for supernatural revelation.

Then shall thy light break forth as the morning…

And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness shall be as the noonday. Isaiah 58:8 & 10

Revelation is one of the greatest assets of a believer (without revelation there is manifestation as nothing comes to be unless it was first seen).

Light is sweet. We need light to make the most of our journey on earth. We are in the era of gross darkness, even statemen are confused. Every genuine child of God is a solution to his world. I can see kings and presidents of nations seeking after you before this fasting season comes to an end.
Remember how Daniel and Joseph were sought after by kings of nations? You can’t be a child of God genuinely and lose relevance by your access to supernatural revelation.

“Fasting, coupled with mighty prayer, is powerful. It can fill our minds with revelations of the Spirit. Fasting in the proper Spirit and in the Lord’s way will energize us Spiritually, strengthen our self-discipline, fill our homes with peace, lighten our hearts with joy, fortify us against temptation, prepare us for times of adversity, and opens the wonders of heaven.” – Joseph B. Wirthlen

3. Freedom From Oppression

Prayer and fasting is the right button to press if you want to be free from oppression.

Is this not the fast that I have chosen? To lose the bands of wickedness, to undo their heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke. – Isaiah 58:6

The oppressor is the devil. He was the one behind the afflictions of Job and is still in the business of afflicting people today. Most sicknesses and losses that people experience in life are not ordinary, the devil is the one behind the ordeals. Be sensitive.

A renowned God’s servant shared a testimony of how God delivered his wife from oppression. It happened that his wife had been diagnosed with a severe ailment and was admitted for many days and the doctors seemed to have no solution. Light stroke the pastor and demanded his wife. He took her home and that marked the end of the ordeal.

Don’t me wrong, I am not against medical practice but you cannot rely on it. Jesus paid the full price of your sickness and disease on the cross.

If you could get it for free, why do you have to pay for it? He took (took is past tense, He is not coming to take it) our infirmities and bears our sicknesses (Mathew 8:17). Jesus had taken our place in sickness and diseases the same way He took the place of Barnabas on the cross.

4. Prayer And Fasting Engenders Supernatural Breakthrough And Empowerment

Supernatural breakthroughs and empowerment are part of our heritage in Christ and prayer and fasting are sure platforms for provoking the release.

And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise foundations of many generations, thou shalt to be called the repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in. Isaiah 58:12

Before Jesus Christ fasted for forty days and nights, He was just like any other person in the land but after the fast, He return with power. Demons cried out His name and left their victims. People began to exclaim: “what manner of man is this!” “We have seen strange things today! Even the wind obeys Him!”

Likewise, your question marks are turned to exclamation marks when you return from the mountain of prayer and fasting. Your shame and reproaches are turned to dignity and honor. You’ll lay hands on the sick and they’ll recover and experience breakthroughs.

5. Prayer and Facilitates Supernatural Speed

If you’ve crawled or been in one spot for a while it’s time to put up a fight by engaging in prayer and fasting.

Accelerated speed is guaranteed in all departments of your life by engaging in prayer and fasting. The things that will take others a hundred years to accomplish, God will give them to you in a blink of an eye. After the order of Nehemiah (a cupbearer who became a governor in the space of three months), you’ll experience a dramatic turnaround and change of story.

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. – Isaiah 40:31

How Should We Come The Lord In Prayer And Fasting (Profitable Approach To Prayer And Fasting)?

Knowing how to position yourself when praying and fasting will help to maximize your engagement for profitable returns.

1. Come with specific prayers

We serve a God of specifics, He does not like ambiguity. if you are believing God for a child, let Him know the sex of the child you would like to have how many? For example, two boys and one girl. Be specific. Don’t assume when it’s time for prayers. Plan your requests. The blind Bartimaeus was shooting, Jesus, the Son of David, have mercy on me! Then Jesus asked, what do you want me to do for you? (See Mark 10:47-52; 1 Samuel 1:11; Nehemiah 1:4/2:4; Exodus 14:15).

Kingdom-focused prayers also have more rewards than personal prayers. To learn more about kingdom-oriented prayers, read one of my posts Kingdom Advancement Prayer Is For Our Profiting

2. Come With Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is an integral part of prayer as every prayer should end with thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the seal of an answered prayer.

Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), WITH thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. Philippians 4:6

The word “with” in the English language is used to emphasize. It means that Thanksgiving is an important aspect of prayer. Avoid grumblings during fasting and have a cheerful countenance (see Mathew 6:17).

3. Come With Expectations

Hope and expectations are vital ingredients of faith. Faith is the substance of the things hoped for (see Hebrews 11:1). But sadly many believers seek God expecting nothing. You are not seeking God for nothing but something. Remember God rewards those that diligently seek Him and do not ask the seeds of Jacob to seek Him in vain. Carry a reward mentality.

For surely there is a latter end [a future and a reward], and your hope and expectation shall not be cut off. – Proverbs 23:18

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not evil, to give you an expected end. Jeremiah 29:11

4. Come With Faith

In the school of faith, everyone gets their desire according to their faith. Don’t just pray, pray as if your life depends on it. It’s fervent prayer and heartfelt prayer mixed with belief that guarantees an answer.

Here is my rule of thumb for success in life which I have been applying to my life and I have seen positive results.

  • Pray as if your life depends on it.
  • Work as if your life depends on it.

Both actions complement each other. You can’t be committed to one and leave the other aside. Prayer without work is an abuse of the gospel of Christ because Christ Himself works. And work without prayer can lead to sweat without results.

“But without faith, it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” – Hebrews 11:6

“And blessed is she that believes: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.” – Luke 1:45

5. Come With A Pure Conscience

The foundation of everything that works in God’s kingdom is righteousness. That’s why in the course of this ongoing fasting season, maintain a pure conscience. Disobedience will rob you of your inheritance in Christ. Stay away from a negative association that may lead to your vomit. Avoid hatred, anger, and resentment.

Remember God does not hear the prayer of sinful people. In case you are still groveling in sin and you would love to surrender your life to Jesus so that God can hear your prayer. Pray with me:

Father in the name of Jesus, thank you for rescuing me from the power of sin, forgive me my sin, I confess to you and accept you as my personal Lord and savior. Thank you Jesus for saving me. In Jesus’ precious name, I pray.

Did you pray the prayer? If Yes, I would like to put you in my prayer. You may ping me via the contact form or just type “I am saved.”

Diligence in Spiritual Matters

It is not enough to engage in spiritual matters without diligence. Christianity is not a passive religion. Passivity has deprived many believers of their inheritance in Christ. God wants us to seek Him diligently, not lackadaisical (lazy). It is not good enough to treat spiritual matters with levity.

But without faith, it is impossible to please and be satisfactory to Him. For whoever would come near to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him [out]. Hebrews 11:6

It takes a serious approach to earn a glorious result; those who serve God casually end as casualties – Oyedepo

You are not serving God for nothing; you are serving Him for something. God is a reward for those who diligently and crazily seek Him. He rewards us according to our work (serving God is a work), and God does not reward groups; He rewards individuals.

And behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according to his work shall be. Revelation 22:12

Lazy people do not go far in life; you have to do nothing to be poor; just sleep and wake up every day, and you’ll court plenty of poverty. Hard work is one of the buttons you should press to be successful in life. Read the biographies of successful people, and you’ll see that they all have some things in common, and one of those things is hard work.

Faith is not a cheap talk; it is hard work (and if you think you were called into ministry as an escape from hard work, you are mistaken). The ministry is not a means of livelihood; it’s working hard to fulfill the mandate of redemption, which is not an easy task.

Take responsibility if you do not want to die as a liability. Everybody is responsible for the outcome of their lives. Don’t blame God; blame yourself. Don’t question God; question yourself. We are absolutely responsible for the outcome of our lives.

There is always something to do to get to where you want to be in life, but you need to find out from scripture what the requirements are to get your desired outcome. Faith is not waiting on the Lord; you can wait until Jesus comes and nothing will happen. Faith is a moving or doing force; it’s putting God’s word to work or acting in line with what you believe. You need to understand how to provoke heaven to step into your affairs.

Paul and Silas did not wait for God to come and deliver them from the prison; they were engaging in prayers, praise, and worship, and that engagement provoked the release of divine presence. (See Acts 16:20-23.) Even in a seemingly hopeless situation, they were still praising God. The last thing that many believers will do today is to praise God when they are confronted with life’s challenges. Praising God in the midst of a crisis is a sign of strong faith.

The problem that most believers have today is that when we are believing God for something, we say to ourselves that we are waiting on the Lord so that the miracle will just fall on our laps as if God were a father Christmas. It was the hands of Moses and God that delivered the Israelites out of Egypt; God needs you to lift your hands that are hanging down, and then He will support you and deliver you out of your trouble.

Don’t wait and fold your hands, waiting for a day that your miracle will be released; you may wait forever. A miracle that leaves you with no responsibility is questionable. It may be traditional magic. Miracles must be tested with the acid test of the word of God. Remember how Aaron’s rod turned into a serpent, and likewise the magicians’ rods? But God was able to prove His supremacy when the serpent of Aaron swallowed all the serpents of the magicians.

According to Zig Ziglar, just any dummy can succeed if he cares to know (and do) what it takes.

You can be skilled, smart, and intelligent and still not be successful. Success in life is not about doing what you feel or like; it’s about doing what it takes with respect to the word of God. Most people know what it takes, and agree to it with their heads, but never do it.

Information is different from conversion. You can hear a sermon that says that giving is the channel to supernatural blessings and agree with your head, but still, be stingy—not just to God but also to yourself. Some people have not bought a pair of clothes for themselves this year, and they are working and earning. Why? Because they are stingy with themselves. Such people, when they hear the message of prosperity, only have information, which does not lead to conversion. It’s the conversion that brings about the results. Friend, be diligent in spiritual matters because that is the key to your triumphant living.
